The Hawaiian's developed their own unique system of massage over centuries. Which faithfully expresses their deep appreciation of the cosmic nature of the physical body. Their style of massage was naturally imbued with their own generosity, love, and spiritual wisdom. The massage that was mainly practiced was called either Lomi Lomi or Kahuna Bodywork.
Lomi Lomi is considered the traditional massage of Hawaii and the word Lomi means "to rub" or to massage . This was usually practiced at home by a gifted member of the extended family or local healer for restoring general wellbeing following malaise or injury. A very highly regarded form of abdominal Lomi was regularly given by Lomi Masters to tribal leaders to help them 'process the mana' absorbed from food. This mana was in return offered to the Gods for protection from the elements.
Kahuna Bodywork is a more specialised and ritualised massage. This was practiced in the temples or 'Heiau' by the Kahuna priests. Revered as the keepers the Spiritual Wisdom, their mastery of mental and spiritual powers enabled them to take the art of massage into higher dimensions for extraordinary healing and transformation on all levels of being.
Today Hawaiian Massage is a dynamic synergy of the best of Lomi Lomi and Kahuna Bodywork. It is usually given however without the use of applications as these tend to require separate and specialist training. True to its purpose, it recaptures the forgotten wisdom of Aloha that was so vital the ancient people of Hawaii.
